A woman tried to light herself on fire after fleeing a five-vehicle collision in north Toronto, police say.

The woman, who was one of the drivers involved in the crash on Bayview Avenue north of Sheppard Avenue, wandered away from the scene of the wreck and into a stranger's home nearby. She then approached the oven and used gas burners and a lighter inside the home to try to set herself alight, investigators said.

"All I can say is that this collision right now is more than just a regular traffic collision," a Toronto police sergeant told reporters Wednesday night.

Investigators are still perplexed about what set off the bizarre chain of events, but the woman was later hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

Two other drivers in the crash were rushed to hospital and are in critical condition.
